Arsene Wenger has revealed that Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta has suffered a setback in his recovery from a calf injury but fellow midfielder Aaron Ramsey could be fit to face Southampton on New Year’s Day.
Arteta suffered his latest injury during last month’s Champions League victory over Borussia Dortmund, a blow that was described as “serious” by his manager at the time.
“He [Arteta] is progressing well. He had a little set back and will not play before January,” he told reporters. “He [Ramsey] could be back for Southampton.”
Ramsey, meanwhile, appeared to be getting back to the form of last season with three goals in two matches before he was substituted at half-time in the 4-1 victory against Galatasaray earlier this month.
The Wales international has since missed his side’s last three matches but could now return to action on January 1 when Ronaldo Koeman’s side travel to St Mary’s.
Wenger also revealed that Laurent Koscielny is close to a return to first-team action and could be in line to face West Ham at Upton Park while Mesut Ozil is also nearing full fitness.
“Laurent Koscielny is short for Friday… maybe back on Sunday,” he added. “He [Ozil] will be back at the beginning of January. He works very hard and is very focused.”
